City of Minneapolis Becomes First Midwestern City to Send Paperless Mail Via Zumbox
Mayor R.T. Rybak Welcomes Minneapolis Residents to Zumbox, the First Paperless Postal System
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA – November 17, 2009 – Zumbox today announced the official launch of its secure, paperless mail service in Minneapolis, MN. The launch event includes an exclusive welcome letter from Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and City Council President Barb Johnson, which has been sent and delivered to all residents via Zumbox. Minneapolis joins New York, NY, Newark, NJ, and San Francisco, CA in Zumbox’s national rollout and becomes the first Midwestern city to embrace paperless mail. Minneapolis residents can view this mail by going to Zumbox.com and entering their home or business street address.
In addition to the Mayor’s letter, the City of Minneapolis is sending public notices and other municipal mail via Zumbox and will notify residents about this new, paperless option through several different methods. Mail sent on paper may include messages informing residents that the online version can be accessed securely at Zumbox.com. This enables residents to view their mail online the same way they view it on paper. In turn, residents may have the option to go paperless and receive future mail exclusively via Zumbox, which is delivered immediately and can be accessed at any time from any location.
“Zumbox helps the City of Minneapolis operate more efficiently while also opening a new channel of communication with residents,” said Mayor R.T. Rybak. “Now we can send and receive paperless letters and postcards from our residents via Zumbox. The time for this technology has certainly arrived, and we are excited to be among the first cities to adopt and integrate it.”
Zumbox has created a web-based platform that powers the world’s first paperless postal system. For every U.S. street address, there is a corresponding Zumbox – a digital mailbox – which enables postal mail to be sent as digital files and received online with no paper and no scanning. This new category – paperless mail – represents the first practical alternative to traditional postal systems. When using Zumbox, municipal governments will eventually save on printing, paper, and postage costs, reduce their environmental impact, and connect with residents through an entirely new and interactive communications channel.
“Minneapolis is an extremely important communications center of this country,” said Zumbox CEO Donn Rappaport. “And so we are very happy to welcome Mayor Rybak to the ranks of forward-thinking municipal leaders who are embracing paperless mail. By notifying residents about the paperless mail option through the City’s website, traditional mailings, and other channels, Mayor Rybak is facilitating a seamless transition to a paperless system for all who wish to use it. This will save taxpayer dollars, reduce the City’s waste stream, and ultimately lead to more effective governing.”
The Zumbox platform represents a one-of-a-kind communications channel for municipal governments. For the first time, mayors can send secure, electronic correspondence (paperless mail) to their residents using delivery criteria such as neighborhoods, ZIP codes, entire cities, or a specific list of street addresses. This can include letters, utility bills, public notices, newsletters, permits, videos, and much more. Zumbox is making its service available to municipal and state governments free of charge. There is no cost for consumers to receive paperless mail via Zumbox.
